He's giving himself time-outs

I think it's in an effort to get out of bed. Cal is getting out of bed, then disciplining himself by putting himself in the hall for a timeout. All without telling us. After we were somewhat impressed by this self-restraint, he did it again within a few minutes. Then we realized that he's got to be up to something. Clever boy.
