Special Olympics

On this absolutely gorgeous Friday I was able to attend the local Special Olympics with my students. Although the students spend most of the day just sitting around, it is still a special occasion for them and one that they remember from year to year. All the students participate in the "tennis ball throw". They limit the number of kids in each heat to approximately 8 and then everyone gets a ribbon (1st-4th and participant). Some of the kids also participate in the "long jump" (aka jump forwards from a stand and we'll measure it), the "assisted walk" (an adult helps lead the child from the start line to the finish line), or the "assisted wheelchair race" (which one of my students won today because he had a very fast assistant pushing him!). Many parents and siblings attend as well. It is utter chaos. We try to know where all the students are but there is almost no way to be completely sure you have everyone. But this is my 4th year attending and we haven't lost anyone yet, so I'm still crossing my fingers and toes.

About 2 hours into the events, Wink and the kids joined me and hung out in the sun. I'm especially grateful that my kids have a chance to attend this event. I hope they can continue to attend annually. Not only do I want them to be very familiar and comfortable with children of all ability levels, but I also want them to celebrate their accomplishments--regardless of how large or small. Special Olympics gives us a chance to celebrate every child.

My brother participated in Special Olympics for YEARS! My mom would always let my sis and I skip school so that we could attend! We LOVED it!
